Are hypnotherapy scripts good or bad? Personally, I think that hypnotherapy scripts are brilliant, and here’s why.
There is no requirement to have a photographic memory as a hypnotherapist—none whatsoever. Thank goodness, as I do not have a perfect memory, which I think is an advantage on so many levels.
We all have a different model of our world using the VAKs (visual, audio, kinaesthetic). For me, delivering the clinical part of the hypnotherapy session is easy. Why? because I have really good scripts. I use all of the modalities and do not favour one over the other, which I am afraid I might be guilty of if I did not have a script in front of me to remind me to use all the modalities.
There are only so many stories available to us. Look at all the Disney movies; they follow a script of usually difficult childhood, more often than not orphaned, and as they grow, they choose to either be good or bad.
Showing us that good can come from the most extreme circumstances just as bad can. We can choose.
Love stories follow a script, too. The Mills and Boons stories adhere to a script for the writers to follow to tell their stories.
One of the funny things is that when my daughter was a student, she had a part-time job as an usher at our local theatre. She loves theatre, and as a little girl, I always took my children to see the pantomime at Christmas. “Oh yes, I did!”.
They loved all the colour and excitement of the theatre. My daughter was so excited to be an usher at the Christmas Pantomime. I believe the first year she was an Usher and the story was Aladdin, and the following year, Cinderella.
She came into my coffee shop and said, “Do you know? I did not realise, but all the pantomimes have the same storyline, with goodies and baddies.” “Oh yes, they do!”. I said with a smile on my face.
We love stories our minds love stories and there are only so many ways one can write a story with a happy ending.
This is why I love scripts. The story is already there, and it enables me as a hypnotherapist to concentrate on the techniques that I have in my toolbox to facilitate individual client-centred therapy.
Finishing with a script.
The difference between a script reader and delivering a script.
Here is the key: just reading a script sounds scripted without feeling or understanding of creating a change in your client. They simply fall asleep or, at worst, do not even relate to what you are saying.
Now, if you know the story or script that you are delivering and deliver it with feeling and tonality, and insert your client’s goals and words, then it becomes very powerful indeed, facilitating powerful changes for your clients.
Even hypnotherapists who claim that they do not use scripts tend to have a story in their heads that they adapt for each client.
Funny Story
Many years ago, I saw my last client of the day. Back then, I would see four clients a day, and on occasions, I would see five.
Well, this particular day in November, yes, I remember the month it was dark and late in the evening, and I was at my office.
Anyway, my last client’s session of the day was his first, and I know my first session inside out and back to front. I always end my hypnotherapy session with the clinical part, using the metaphor that I love all about reminding us that we all have a choice.
I record the clinical part live in my therapy room. Well, I started with… “While you are resting in this very pleasant way, I am going to give you some instructions and suggestions…”
The next thing I heard myself saying was, “Number 5, eyes open, take a good deep breath, and stretch”.
I could not believe it. I looked at the length of the recording, and it was 26 minutes. I had delivered the whole clinical part of the session deep in hypnosis!
I wouldn’t say I liked that at all, but having a script in front of me helps to keep me in a lighter state of hypnosis.
I would love to hear your funny stories in the therapy room.
