Hypnotherapy Supervision: Why It Matters

Starting out as a hypnotherapist can feel exciting yet daunting. No matter how well-trained you are, real-world practice often brings unexpected challenges. This is where supervision becomes invaluable, especially for newly qualified hypnotherapists.Hypnotherapy supervision

The Role of Supervision in Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a self-regulated profession, meaning practitioners must take responsibility for their professional development. If you belong to a self-regulated governing body, you will likely need to adhere to their supervision guidelines.

For example, the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR) recommends that newly qualified registrants engage in at least two hours of supervision every three months during their first two years of practice. After this period, supervision is encouraged but remains voluntary.

It’s important to note that these recommendations assume full-time practice, but many new hypnotherapists start out part-time. That’s why I offer flexible, ad-hoc supervision tailored to fit your needs—without requiring long-term contracts.

How Can Supervision Help You?

Supervision provides a safe and supportive space to:

  • Discuss client cases and challenges
  • Refine your techniques
  • Gain insights from experienced practitioners

Sometimes, small tweaks in approach can make a big difference. Let me share an example.

Case Study: Jack and the Client Who Couldn’t Relax

Jack, a newly qualified hypnotherapist, came to me with a challenge. One of his clients insisted she simply could not relax, making hypnotherapy sessions difficult. Jack tried everything he knew, but nothing worked.

I gave him a counterintuitive suggestion: Tell her not to relax.

Jack laughed at first, but here’s why it works—when people try too hard to relax, they create tension instead. By shifting the focus away from relaxation and simply guiding her through breathing exercises, Jack removed the pressure.

At their next session, he said: “I don’t want you to relax. All I need you to do is follow my instructions. When I say take a deep breath and slow your breathing, just do that.”

The result? The client stopped overthinking, followed his lead, and was finally able to ease into the process.

Experience Over Theory

Supervision isn’t just about reviewing textbook techniques—it’s about applying real-world wisdom. With over 20 years of experience in the therapy room, I offer guidance that goes beyond theory, helping you navigate the practical challenges of hypnotherapy.
