If you’ve ever had a client say their NHS CBT therapist told them to stop hypnotherapy, you’re not alone—and neither are they doing anything wrong.CBT therapy

At the HSOH School of Hypnotherapy, we prepare students for the real-world challenges of practice, and this is one of them. Many clients report being advised to pause or abandon hypnotherapy while undergoing CBT, often with warnings that it might “interfere” with their progress. It’s a common occurrence—and a crucial topic to cover in training.

Clients Are in Charge of Their Healing

One of the core values we instil at HSOH is this: clients are autonomous. They have the right to explore and combine different forms of therapy that feel right for them. Healing isn’t linear, and it’s rarely achieved through a single method.

As future hypnotherapists, our students learn to honour and support this autonomy—especially when clients are made to feel unsure or conflicted about continuing hypnotherapy alongside NHS treatment.

Why Do Some NHS Therapists Dismiss Hypnotherapy?

Understanding the system helps us respond with empathy and clarity. Here are some reasons why NHS professionals may discourage other therapies:Hypnotherapy or CBT

  • NHS CBT is limited in scope: It’s typically offered in short, scripted sessions, and often delivered by staff with only basic training. The focus is on managing symptoms, not necessarily resolving deeper patterns.
  • Lack of awareness about hypnotherapy: Many NHS professionals haven’t been trained in modern, ethical hypnotherapy and may not understand how it works—or how different it is from outdated misconceptions.
  • Systemic rigidity: The NHS model is still largely medicalised and hierarchical. If something doesn’t fit neatly into their framework, it’s often side-lined—regardless of client experience or emerging evidence.
  • Concerns about mixed messages: Some therapists worry that integrating approaches may “confuse” the client. While well-meaning, this stance can undermine a person’s agency and make them feel disempowered.

How We Train Our Students to Respond

At HSOH, we teach students not only the practical skills of hypnotherapy but also how to navigate these kinds of professional dynamics. That includes:

  • Supporting clients to make empowered choices—without telling them what to do
  • Communicating confidently and respectfully when clients express concerns about “conflicting therapies”
  • Avoiding criticism of other professionals, while advocating for the effectiveness of hypnotherapy
  • Being aware of ethical boundaries when clients are under NHS care

It’s Not About Hypnotherapy vs CBT

We respect CBT and recognise the value it can bring. But we also know that many clients need more than symptom management—they need space to explore, reflect, and change from the inside out. That’s where hypnotherapy can be a powerful complement.

This isn’t about competition. It’s about offering people choice and meeting them as whole, intelligent individuals who are capable of deciding what works best for them.

What Makes HSOH Training Different

We don’t only teach scripts. We don’t teach rigid formulas. We train people to be thoughtful, flexible facilitators of change. Teaching inner child Gestalt and NLP techniques.Hypnotherapy Training

Our approach is grounded in real-life client work—so you’ll learn how to hold space for clients who are navigating multiple approaches, including NHS support, private counselling, coaching, and more.

By the time you qualify, you’ll feel confident responding to these conversations with clarity, compassion, and professional integrity.

In Summary

  • Clients have the right to choose hypnotherapy—even while engaging in NHS treatment
  • They do not need permission from any therapist to explore what helps them
  • As a hypnotherapist, you can support them with confidence and without judgement
  • Hypnotherapy can be a powerful, respectful complement to other forms of support
