How to Promote Your Hypnotherapy Business
Let’s be honest—being a hypnotherapist is amazing, but getting clients? That’s another story. You could have the best training in the world, be brilliant at what you do, and… your diary could still be empty.
Marketing isn’t the sexy part of the job, but it’s essential. The good news? You don’t need thousands of pounds or a fancy advertising agency to attract clients. With a few practical strategies—and a bit of consistency—you can grow your practice and help more people achieve their goals.
For me, December is always interesting—super busy at the start of the month and then it goes quiet. Not surprising, really. Everyone’s running around, sorting out Christmas, stressed out and focused on family and festivities.
One thing I always say during my Diploma training is this: you could be the best hypnotherapist in the world… and still not have clients. Conversely, you could be the worst and have a fully booked diary.
Training as a hypnotherapist is the easy part. Marketing yourself and attracting clients? That’s the challenge.
Now, if you have a massive budget and can spend thousands of pounds a month on advertising, yes, you’ll be busy. But most of us don’t. Most of us just want to help people—and marketing isn’t something we naturally enjoy or are taught how to do.
The excuses I hear
“People can’t afford it.” Not true. We all spend money on what’s important to us. I remember sharing a room with a beauty therapist, Sharon, above a coffee shop years ago. Whenever I arrived, she’d be chatting away with the coffee shop owner, not working. One day she said, “Do you know the country is in recession?” I said yes. She said, “Then how come you’re so busy?”
Simple answer: people always need help. When the economy is tough, people need confidence, positivity, support with depression, job hunting, fears, and more. When it’s not, they still want to feel good, overcome fears, or achieve personal goals. Hypnotherapy is about helping people achieve, no matter the circumstances.
“There are too many hypnotherapists.” Wrong again. The fact that there are many hypnotherapists just means more people know about hypnotherapy, which makes it more popular. And we can help 9 out of 10 people with at least one problem.
“I need to keep training.” Training is important, but constantly chasing the latest technique or fad doesn’t get you clients. Get confident with what you know, specialise, and focus on helping clients achieve results. The time and money spent on endless courses is better invested in marketing and building your practice.
Things You Can Do to Market Your Business
- Networking
Go out and meet people. But don’t just go once—be consistent. Build relationships. People buy from people. Don’t sell too hard; just get to know people and let them know what you do. - Have a good website
Your website should be clear, professional, and show what you do, who you help, and how people can contact you. Include testimonials if possible. - Business cards
You’d be surprised how many people don’t have them. I always take mine to networking events—and I always get enquiries. - Post regularly on social media
Share useful tips, client successes (with permission), and your personality. People follow people, not faceless businesses. - Give talks or workshops
Offer free or low-cost talks at local community centres, libraries, or online. It positions you as an expert and gets people interested in your services. - Collaborate with complementary businesses
Think yoga studios, gyms, therapists, nutritionists, or wellness centres. Partnerships are a great way to get referrals. - Encourage word-of-mouth referrals
Happy clients can become your best marketers. Ask for reviews and encourage them to tell friends and family. - Email newsletters
Stay in touch with past clients or interested contacts. Share tips, updates, or promotions. It keeps you front-of-mind when they need hypnotherapy.
Marketing your hypnotherapy business isn’t about having a huge budget. It’s about being visible, consistent, and confident in your skills. Be known, be helpful, and clients will come.
