What I Teach My Hypnotherapy Students at HSOH

One of the most common presenting issues hypnotherapists work with is weight loss. And yet, it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

When students first train, it’s easy to assume weight loss is about food, portion size, or willpower. Very quickly, however, I teach my students at the HSOH School of Hypnotherapy that weight loss is rarely about weight at all.

The truth is that as Hypnotherapists we only work with one thing. Inner self-worth. You feel good inside, you feel good outside.

Tracy’s Hypnotherapy for weight loss.

When I first started as a hypnotherapist over 20 years ago. My notes were terrible as I was new. Tracy came to see me because she wanted to start her own hairdressing business but lacked the confidence to do so.

Tracy went through my formula, and she started her own business. Fantastic news.

Well, Tracy very kindly recommended me to lots of people. However, Tracy told them that she came to me for weight loss. Which confused me!

After several referrals from Tracy, I called her and thanked her. But I said, “How come you’re saying that you came to see for weight loss?” Her answer surprised me, as she said I had seen you for weight loss. I said no; you came to me for the confidence to start your own hairdressing business. Wow!! Tracy exclaimed, so I did. However, I have lost nearly 3 stone in weight, and I now have 3 hairdressing salons.

We both laughed, and Tracy realised that because she was happy with herself, her eating changed.

Weight loss is about mindset, focus, emotional associations, identity, and subconscious patterns — and unless we understand that, we’re only ever working at the surface.

The importance of formulation in weight loss work

At HSOH, we teach a clear formula for a reason. Weight loss work demands proper formulation, not scripts pulled from a folder. Scripts are useful for reinforcing therapy.Hypnosis training

Two clients may come to you with the same goal — “I want to lose weight” — yet require entirely different therapeutic approaches. Without a detailed intake and a strong understanding of the client’s subconscious drivers, progress is often limited or short-lived.

This is why the first session for weight loss is always longer. You need time to explore habits, emotional triggers, history, motivation, resistance, and expectations. Weight loss cannot — and should not — be treated as a one-session issue.

Causes are not always negative

One of the most important things I teach my students is this: when working with causes in weight loss, the memory is often a good one.

There is a common assumption that regression means uncovering trauma or distress. In reality, regression is simply a way of accessing a subconscious mindset — nothing more, nothing less. I only regress when it is appropriate, and always with purpose.

Let me share an example I often use in training.

Many years ago, I worked with a client — we’ll call her Karen. During our work, it became clear that food, particularly cake, held a powerful emotional association for her. Through gentle regression, Karen found herself back in childhood.Mindset hypnotherapy

When she was a little girl, she would come home from school before her mum returned from work. Her mum baked cakes for a local cake shop, and she would often leave a bowl of uncooked cake mixture on the side just for Karen. Sometimes there were little chocolate pieces mixed in. Alongside it would be a glass of milk.

Karen would sit in the kitchen, licking the bowl, drinking her milk, and feeling safe, happy, and loved.

As an adult, Karen worked in a cake shop.

This wasn’t a coincidence — it was conditioning.

Her subconscious mind had linked cake with comfort, warmth, safety, and happiness. Food wasn’t the problem. The meaning attached to food was.

Comfort eating tells us more than we realise

We often hear people say, “I comfort eat.” But if you think about it, you would only comfort eat if food was linked to something comforting in the first place.

This is a crucial insight for hypnotherapists. Causes do not have to be painful to be powerful. In fact, some of the strongest subconscious drivers come from positive experiences that the mind has held onto for decades.

Understanding this changes everything about how we work with weight loss clients.

Why scripts alone don’t work

This is where many newly qualified hypnotherapists struggle. Weight loss is not a protocol-led issue. It requires flexibility, listening, and clinical thinking.

At HSOH, I teach students how to:

  • Identify subconscious associations
  • Work ethically with causes
  • Adapt interventions to the individual
  • Avoid blame, shame, or control-based language

Weight loss clients often “know what to do”. What they don’t always understand is why they do what they do — and that’s where skilled hypnotherapy comes in.

Why weight loss work takes time

Another key lesson I teach is this: weight loss is not a single-session outcome.

It involves:

  • Focus
  • Mindset
  • Emotional regulation
  • Habit change
  • Identity shifts

This is why approaches such as the hypnogastric band are so effective when delivered properly. At HSOH, we offer live CPD training in hypnogastric band work, taught over four sessions.

Not only does this reflect the reality of sustainable weight loss, but it also provides practitioners with a strong, ethical structure — and yes, it’s also an excellent marketing tool when used responsibly.

Training hypnotherapists to think, not just perform

Above all, my aim as a teacher and trainer is to help hypnotherapists move beyond “doing techniques” and start and using Clinical Scripts.

To truly be client-centred and not have your clients fit your ‘toolbox’, being trained in the IMR (Ideo motor response) using inner child and Gestalt is paramount to being client-centred.

Weight loss work is complex, nuanced, and deeply human. When taught properly, it becomes one of the most rewarding areas of practice — for both client and therapist.

And when you understand that weight loss is rarely about weight, everything else starts to make sense.
