On the 5th April Bob Burns came to HSHO to present his SWAN workshop there were 23 hypnotherapists in attendance including myself. The day was great fun and the energy was buzzing it is such a good feeling when you have a group of likeminded people in a room.
The idea for Bob to run a workshop at the HSOH started on New Year’s Eve I received a PM from Bob on Facebook asking me if I wanted to meet up for a drink. Bob introduces himself as a ‘sort of magician’ and is great fun to be with as he loves doing magic and playing. So sure enough he shows you his little tricks and demonstrated the SWAN with me. It really made me giggle and was very entertaining. From there I started asking the question that I like to ask busy hypnotherapists “What is it that makes some hypnotherapists really busy and others who struggle getting clients”? Bob’s answer resonated with me and it is just one word ‘ACTION’! Simple or is it? I said “yes but what sort of action”? The example Bob gave was he said that when he mentors hypnotherapists he tells them that they are to hand out three business cards every day for the next three weeks. It doesn’t matter if you are out walking the dog; out for dinner in a shop at work anywhere, he has three rules ‘see the people, see the people and see the people’. He said if they can’t do that then you are wasting your time mentoring them. I really enjoyed our lunch together and just suggested “how do you fancy coming to the Hampshire School Of Hypnotherapy and run a workshop?” “Let’s do it” So the action started date set email campaign posts on Face book and of course the minimum number required to make it worthwhile and the all-important question how much.
Bob is definitely a hypnotherapist that shares his knowledge and he said that even though he shares all this knowledge very few people will act upon it and use it? I think this is true the thing is we tend to like our comfort zones and if it is not written down for us telling us exactly what to say we find ourselves shying away from using new techniques putting ideas into ACTION. Why is this? Have you noticed how you tend to sit in the same place how you tend to stay within the same groups? Well this is normal we as human beings like comfort. We like to know what is happening and change requires going out of your comfort zone. However this is not set in stone if you start slowly and practice.
Fear of failure can be another reason we do not try out new techniques if you are good at something why set yourself up to fail? But if you really think about it when you do fail at something you find yourself learning from that experience. Also once you start to play and try new things find ways over around and through that experience and you can meet with greater success. Just a thought!
The day was a great opportunity to meet other hypnotherapists and hear how they work share ideas and stories. Working as hypnotherapist can be a bit lonely and it can be very motivating to talk with like minded people. As well as seeing the people it is also advisable to mix with other hypnotherapists a word of advice we are all trained very differently and each school has its own language for different techniques. When you are chatting with other hypnotherapists and they mention a technique you have never heard of ask “what is it that you do”? Very often you will find it is a technique that you have been trained on and it is just given a different name.
